I was a kid in the mid-80s, and our local FOX affiliate used to run episodes of "The Monkees" in the afternoons. I also had a copy of almost every Monkee album that was given to me as a group of Lps from my uncle. Being someone born in the 70's who grew up with the Monkees, and having a thirst for campy / horrible (albeit interesting) television from the era preceding my birth, I sought this special out as soon as it became available on VHS in 1997. Once the internet became easily accessible to me, I read every iota of information I could about this oddity of American television. It seems that for ten years in American TV history (1969-1979,) anything went. I don't think there was really a more adventurous time in TV history, (other than 1946 - 1956,) where something like this could have been produced / shown. I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. and Ms. Carlson: This is something you need to seek out and watch before you die. May I suggest you also watch "The Paul Lynde Halloween Special," "The Brady Bunch Variety Hour," and "The Mama Cass Television Program..." and watch them in that order. They'll give you a good idea of what was so special about TV Specials back in the day!

Out of curiosity, I looked in the Guide and I see that The Monkees comic book ran 17 issues from March of 1967 to October of 1969. Learn something new every day.

Strangely, I know the Monkees and I know comics, but I've never seen the Monkees comics. If you'd like to email me whatever you're looking for, though, I can take a look. Maybe I can suggest some options.

I know this post is older, but I'm hunting for a specific Monkees comic with a particular character. You seem very knowledgeable about the group and their products, so I was wondering if you you could help or offer up any advice for how to find it. I have pictures of the character I can send. Thanks.

Protective parents? (grin)

We just finished watching Brian Auger's commentary on it, and it's weird to say, but his is the best on the whole box set. Too many of the Monkees themselves are silent for long stretches, or they have feedback that boils down to "wasn't this silly?", but he gives a really good picture of the era.

What a coinky-dink! I had just added the Monkees DVD with 33-1/3 Revolutions to my Netflix queue the other day because I'd never seen it, even though I watched The Monkees faithfully when I was 7-8 years old. I don't know why I didn't watch it back then, I don't think I would have been more interested in the Oscars...

This is available as part of the season dvd sets? One more reason to get around to buying those, I guess! I've been a Monkees fan since I was a little kid (when WLVI out of Boston would show reruns as part of their daily kids programming), and I've heard about this special and always wanted to see it. Here's hoping for money and Besy Buy cards this Christmas!
