Bah and feh. Just because I'm not allowed to say that I'm really looking forward to K-- T--'s new book doesn't mean I'm NOT. Ah well. My 2005 run-down will have lots of manga-talk in it, don't worry.

Hm, I don't know about a monthy comic from the people listed by James Sime, but I'd love to see a comics anthology magazine edited by some of those names. That seems a more apt use of comics bloggers' passion, which tends to be about identifying good comics.

Actually, that comics anthology magazine has been my lottery fantasy for a while. Truthfully, my real lottery fantasy is to offer Rachel Hartman a compelling page rate, but a comics anthology is a good excuse for that.

"I don’t know Sime so I can’t tell, but are you sure this wasn’t sarcasm? Something along the lines of the standard “try doing it yourself” dismissal of critics?"

Nah, I don't think James is saying that. He usually seems like a pretty genuine guy at least in his online corespondence.

"Shane, I like your idea, although I think it might be hard to convince people to pay money for what they can get for free. "

Yeah, that's the rub isn't it. Then again McSweeney's has a lot of content online in addition to their books. I don't know. I just know I would love to see in-depth looks into some of the topics discussed on blogs. I believe a book or magazine would be a better place to see that as a blog seems better formated for quick insiteful posts rather than long form works. I guess what I would like to see is extended coverage of the topics I see on blogs.

Guy, the thought hadn't even occurred to me. I think James always talks with such enthusiasm.

Alan, bravo. That's a great way to put it.

...thousands of potential comic creators bringing the passion, charm, and wit that makes them such entertaining writers, pontificators, and industry personalities to the published comic book page.

It appears that most people assume if you write about comics, you want to create them, too. And I just personally don't have that in me. It wasn't until I was offered the chance to pitch a series for Marvel a couple of years back that I really had to ask myself if I wanted to write comics, and the answer really is "no."

I did write a short non-fiction piece for an anthology coming out this year, but that's the exception that proves the rule. I am much more interested in exploring my own reaction to the art of others than in trying to create my own...

Monthly books by all of those people? No, not unless they really wanted to. I would like to see a monthly magazine or a quarterly book with the best of the best out there. Maybe something like McSweeney's or The Best American Nonrequired Reading series of books. That would be grand.
