Smut Peddler #3

Smut Peddler #3 is a minicomic anthology of tasteful but titillating erotica. 48 pages of diverse sex-inspired stories for adults for only $5!

I’m the Submissions Editor (which means that the folks who do all the real coordination and assembly work — Trisha L. Sebastian, Sean Bieri, and Carla Speed McNeil — ask me what I think during the selection period, and I’m quite honored to participate). That means this is NOT a review! This is me telling you why you want a copy of this comic I’m very proud of and entertained by.

Covers are by Rachel Hartman (tipping a belly dancer, and it’s great to see new work by her) and Nicholas Burns (a lovely pun with a nude male sunbather; this is his third cover for us, providing continuity). There are two because it’s a flipbook, the better to show off the variety of contributions.

Underneath, mpMann and Bevis Musson swap off duties (one writing, the other drawing, then vice versa) on a pair of bookend stories. In one, two women bathe together; in the other, their partners work out, all while discussing their likes and dislikes when it comes to attractive anatomy. Arousing in their own right, together the two add up to more.

One of the high points for me, just for demonstrating how rich a world she’s built and how well-suited it is for any kind of story, is Carla’s orgy story featuring Magri and his virtual world. I adore her art and her ideas! (Oh, and mine came with a wonderful promotional bookmark featuring a nude sketch of Jaeger (from Carla’s Finder). Yummy!)

After that, showing contrast from Carla’s beautiful linework, Edward J. Grug’s cartoony potato-people act out a funny encounter, where watching The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy turns them on. J. Kevin Carrier and Karen O’Donnell team up for a scifi piece about a different kind of penetration, tattooing. Then there’s a Danny Hellman pinup, “Nude with Toy Robots”.

On the other side, Tom Beland illustrates an S&M story by Managing Editor Trisha L. Sebastian that demonstrates the versatility of a simplified style. Elizabeth Genco and Leland Purvis provide an interlude in a deserted movie theater, while Barbara Lien-Cooper and Terry Parr contribute some historical bondage scenes set in the 1950s.

Not everyone will be turned on by everything, but all of it’s well-done and playfully sexy. I’m thrilled to be part of a project with such amazingly talented contributors, and I’m even happier to show how there truly are comics for everyone … including adults who think sex is fun!
