That's a good point, Ed, but I suspect as a "noted comic journalist and scholar" (ha!) I could talk them into something. :)

More significantly, I'm now wondering if I should talk to them about current and future donations.

Johanna, You will need to call the Comic Arts Collection and see if they will let you do any reading of the material. My understanding from my students days there was the Collection is only available to people who can demonstrate they are doing research in the comic field. The Collection is not open to the general public for leisure reading. If this is wrong, please let me know.

Ah, you found it for me! Thank you. I tried poking around, but I obviously gave up too early.

"I had no idea that was here in town! I wonder what their reading policies are."

Via http://www.library.vcu.edu/jbc/speccoll/speccoll.html
"Special Collections and Archives is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. until 5 P.M. All other times are by appointment."

Presumably they operate like most library special collections & archives: you go to the reading room, request items that you'd like to see, and they'll bring them out for you to read.

More info about their collection is at http://www.library.vcu.edu/jbc/speccoll/comicbk1.html
