I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Octavia Butler, a well-recognized science fiction writer. I love this quote, the way she described herself:
a pessimist if I’m not careful, a feminist, a black, a former Baptist, an oil-and-water combination of ambition, laziness, insecurity, certainty, and drive.
Except for the race, I fit that description myself. Maybe that’s why her books were so poignant and thought-provoking to me.

Oh man, she was one of my favorites.

What did she die of? Except for the black and female part, I fit that description to. I’ve always loved her work.

According to the New York Times, she “died on Friday after a fall near her home … The precise cause of death has not been determined, Ms. Butler’s literary agent, Merrilee Heifetz, said on Monday. She added that Ms. Butler had suffered from severe hypertension and other health problems in recent years.”
