Dave, good to hear from you! I've sent an email separately.

The DVD has some nice extras, yes, including a lengthy making of and a commentary by the director that kept our attention for the length of the film (my favorite test). I'd love to get you and KC together on this!

Hi Johanna- Been a long time and I hope alll is well with you. Sounds like it, and Ditto on this end. Anyway, I enjoyed your comments on "Grace Of My Heart" as it's been a favorite of mine for some time now. I have an old VHS copy. Any good extras on the DVD?

I forced my girlfriend to watch it not long ago and subjected her to the same running commentary that KC did with you. I suspect he and I would have a lot to talk about under similar circumstances.

Here's a tidbit: In the song "Unwanted Number," which was written by EC, he threw in a line about "January till December," which he intended as a nod to Carole King's "It Might As Well Rain Until December." Cool.

The best outcome of this film, IMHO, is that it bought EC and Burt Bacharach together as collaborators, in turn spawning a wonderful CD, "Painted From Memory." I highly recommend it.

Metropolitan: that I should see it again sometime now that I might understand it/sympathize better. That's a cool take on the Graduate, too. Sometimes we can enjoy films for elements that aren't obvious at first glance, like the way I watch wartime films from the 40s in order to see the little bits of daily life.

F451: According to IMDB, by the time the film finished shooting, the male lead was flat-out refusing to speak to the director, so I have no problem believing that the novel is better.

concerning Fahrenheit 451, I haven't seen it but I can gladly recommend the novel. even though the burning of books isn't quite fitting for a modern dark utopia theme, it's still a very strong and in my opinion timeless story.

I have little tolerance for the "poor useless rich kids" genre

What's your take on Metropolitan?

I loved The Graduate when I first saw it as a callow youth back in, hm, '93 or '94? Obviously some of our mores have changed enough that certain aspects of the film seem dated, but--and I almost blush to confess this--this was one of the first films where I was really conscious of the cinematographic effects and the way they shaped the story. It was a big learning experience for me.

That's what a coworker thought, but I think it's more a reflection of how she'd changed. When she first saw it, she thought it was romantic; later, she recognized how depressing the ending really is.

Another possible candidate: The Big Chill.
