Archie Comics is bringing back Katy Keene, “the fashion queen”, beginning in July. I’m excited to see that they’re continuing a long comic book tradition, one previously thought extinct due to legal concerns: letting fans contribute. Here’s an excerpt from their PR:

Katy Keene is Hollywood’s newest Superstar, and at only 21 is appearing in movies and on TV, modeling for magazines, and recording hit records. Katy lives in Hollywood with her teenage sister, MacKenzie, where’s she’s romantically pursued by movie producer, Rodney VanRonson. Katy also has an apartment in New York City, where K.O. Kirby, extreme-sports star, hopes to win her heart. And always hoping to upstage Katy in both showbiz and romance is her rival, Gloria Gold.
Katy, along with these friends and others, lives the glamorous and fast-paced life of red carpets and movie studios, traveling to the fantastic places of the world, but Katy needs your help. She needs ideas for what to wear to Hollywood premieres or just around the house, as well as ideas for her friends, too! And where should she go? And what should she do in her movies and adventures? Part of the fun is up to you, the readers, so please send your designs and ideas to Katy by email, fax or mail to:
Katy Keene
325 Fayette Ave.
Mamaroneck, New York 10543
Fax 914-381-2335And please send your name so that Katy can give you credit if she uses your suggestion. Keep an eye out for Katy’s upcoming stories in Archie Comics titles to see if she’s using your idea and giving you the credit you deserve!
That’s a great way to encourage readership and involvement with the characters. (And judging from the outfit shown, she could use the help, since she’s wearing a stripper skirt. Note: image has been replaced. The skirt in the original picture was short and had a slit up one side to show even more leg.)

Okay, I have to ask -
What makes it a stripper skirt?
May 25, 2006 at 2:37 PM
Well, it is short enough to recall a notorious AbFab line… plus slit up the side.

If not a stripper, than a porn star. Looks like that’s how Katy rose so fast and made so much money in Hollywood.

If it was denim, it’d be one of those ultraminis that I saw on campus so much this spring semester. I really envied that style, But without the slit though.

In my opinion, if you take the width from the top of the skirt to the top of the slit, you get something that would make a better belt than skirt.
Especially given that Archie’s target audience is under 18 years old.

As the girls on gofugyourself.com once said, I can see what her fallopian tubes are doing.
It looks like a booth bunny outfit. Although Katie herself is drawn quite cute.

I think the young audience would apperciate the skimpy clothes as many girls look up to older more fashionable teens and adults. I guess that I assumed because I read Archie when I was a girl that girls are the majority of readers, though..

Shannon, perhaps, but I suspect their parents wouldn’t be so appreciative! (Well, maybe the dads… shades of Dr. Who’s Leela!)

Here’s a vaguely related story: “Hasbro has canceled plans to produce a line of fashion dolls modeled on the pop act the Pussycat Dolls after parents objected to the group’s racy image.”
May 26, 2006 at 12:47 PM
Yikes, when I heard that there would be a series of dolls based on The Pussycat Dolls, I figured those were collector items meant for adults.
I know the origin of Barbie and all, but it seems a bit misguided these days to make a childrens toy based on burleque performers.

Everyone seems to have forgotten that that was their beginning, though — now they’re just entertainers.
May 26, 2006 at 3:09 PM
Hmm.. I wonder if this is the case of Archie artists finally having an adult image they can “sex up” and not get in real trouble with? (with her being an adult and a model)
Hence the over compensation on their part.

Now it’s up to you.
If you don’t like what Katy is wearing, send in your own designs.
Andrew will use them.
