My Time at San Diego

In honor of this crazy week, here’s a picture of me at San Diego the first time I went, in 1995. I’ve only been back once since then, in 2003, because the more I hear, the more I appreciate staying home.

In the front is Rich Faber, who kindly provided the photo. The main row, left to right, is Howard Porter, Patricia Mulvihill, Steve Lieber, me, Alex Amado, and Michael Grabois. Back row is Brian Bailie and KC Carlson. (We wouldn’t have begun going out if not for this meeting in the bar, so it’s incredibly significant to me, but I’ve told that story before.) Ah, memories.

Good ol’ Brian Bailie. Did you see him at Heroes? He stopped to talk and said he stop back, but alas…

I did, but we didn’t get much chance to catch up. Sadly, I forgot what he said he was doing now… I still remember him working on short-run comic Primitives.

Wow you look so… is it worse if if I say tiny or young?:)

Neither one, since it WAS more than ten years ago now.

No, you went back the next year too, in 1996, remember? In your 1995 con report, you mentioned us going to that BBQ place across the street for dinner. We tried to do it again the next year but we couldn’t arrange it. In 1996 you wore your cheerleader outfit to the pro/fan trivia contest to psyche Mark Waid out, remember? :) (Here’s my con report, I couldn’t find yours.) That was also the year of Steve and Elayne’s big party at the Clarion.
No, I don’t think any pictures exist of Johanna in her cheerleader’s outfit. Shrinking Violet, yes, but not a cheerleader.

Wow, bless the internet. And your research skills. I didn’t remember that AT ALL.
Oh, and thank you for identifying the person in the photo I couldn’t remember — it was Howard Porter, then doing The Ray but now best known for JLA.

You didn’t remember dressing up as a cheerleader in a room full of comics geeks? I don’t recall you saying where you got the outfit, but you sure knew how to shake a pom-pom! :)
If that didn’t work to distract Waid, we had the “wave the Rob Liefeld Captain America issues at him to distract him” plan. I don’t think that worked either. I think he and Devin Grayson were an item then.

I wore a short plaid pleated skirt to a lot of cons back then… it all blurs together. :)

True Johanna, I was just kind of surprised as you kind of look almost exactly like the 15 year old daughter of my cousin in that picture. Which was just startling to just see, I bet you got carded for ID!:)

Oh my god. That’s a decade ago. My thoughts are best expressed by George Orwell:
“How small everything has grown, and how terrible is the deterioration in myself.”
On the other hand, I don’t wear anything like that vest anymore.

I knew you’d have a terrific quote! Yeah, time keeps on passing away…

I saw Rich Faber at the con this past weekend. He hasn’t changed much. . . Like Steve, though, there was a pronounced lack of vest.

Augie: Mercifully, my wife tossed all of the vests years ago! It was good to see you at the show this year. Always a pleasure. And thanks for the compliment. What most people don’t see, until they get really close, is all the grey in the hair and beard! And I earned every one! ;-)
Johanna: If you’d asked, I would have happily provided names for those I knew! Glad you enjoyed this happy memory! You and KC are a great team, so I’m pleased to have provided this trip down memory lane for you. =)
Steve: I think this photo records the first time you and I met! Glad we’ve been able to run into each other somewhat frequently over the years!
Best,
Rich
