Late Fees

Eric Wolfe Hanson created the minicomic Late Fees as part of 24 Hour Comics Day 2004. (It was later included in the anthology 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2004.)

It’s a story about a guy crashing in the desert in a near-future setting and getting attacked by Monkey Bugs. It’s attractive, with plenty of action and movement as the protagonist faces off against a variety of creatures. The lines are confident, and the story flows quickly through its incidents.

If you know the origins of the story, then some of the artistic choices explain themselves. For instance, the pages mostly consist of three panels in a variety of arrangements and sizes. At one point, the guy falls into a crevasse, leading to a couple of mostly black pages with word balloons and sound effects.

Eric has a blog, and you can see art samples online.
