I couldn't agree with you more. From the moment I saw the preview of this movie I wanted to see it. Sandra and Keanu's chemistry on screen is worth any film and I was not disappointed. I didn't care that some reviews were poor, I'm my own critic. I give it two thumbs up and purchased it the day it was released on DVD.

I'd seen mention of the source, but thank you for providing more detailed information. It sounds like this was a pretty faithful adaptation. And yeah, the "foreign" origin likely does account for why it feels so unique.

Slightly off-topic: Did you know that the original was a Korean movie called Il Mare? http://www.opuszine.com/blog/entry.html?ID=2459

Maybe that adds to the non-typical Hollywood sensibility of the film and the fact that it's not a blockbuster right away? *just speculating, not having seen either of them*
