The art in IWJ is getting to be a real turn-off for me, too. Not just the basketballs, which leaves me wondering how can a chef cook in such restrictive clothing, but also the facial expressions which gives those characters bad cartoon voices in my head as I read them. For now (I think I'm only in volume 8) the cooking is holding me, I like reading the characters talk about their philosophies about food, but so many other factors work agaisnt my enjoyment.

I'm not normally into food manga- but the idea was just so wacked I had to try it. Bread-baking manga! Of course, the interesting thing here is that Japan has no national bread, so there's more of a goal than, say, Iron Wok Jan. The art is nice and the subject is well-researched.

That's a good comparison -- I've given up IWJ because I no longer cared, and I was tired of how overly exaggerated it was, both visually (with the girls smuggling basketballs) and in terms of the characters (one-dimensional). This may be a good replacement. "Good-natured" is an excellent word for it.

I love this book. It reminds me of a more good-natured Iron Wok Jan. The exaggeration really works for me; it has a cartooniness that's unusual in manga that don't switch all the way to super-deformed for the comedic beats. And yeah, it really does make you crave fresh bread, doesn't it?
