Red Menace Out This Week

I checked out the sneak peek DC has posted for Red Menace #1, out this Wednesday, and I was impressed.

The description makes it sound something like “what if Captain America unmasked before Joseph McCarthy’s HUAC?” and the preview bears that out. Jerry Ordway’s art (inked by Al Vey) is stunning — he’s a terrific choice for a story with a traditional patriotic hero at the core, because his work is so solidly accomplished.

The three pages available don’t give me much to go on when it comes to the story, but it looks as though they’re giving the heroes an early victory against the anti-Communist witch-hunters, surprising the head of the investigating committee with the hero’s identity. It’ll be interesting to see how the story continues, and if they’re able to pull something new out of the setting and premise.

Is it worth mentioning that, by defintion, Senator Joseph McCarthy was not a member of HUAC (the House UnAmerican Activities Committee)? The preview pages get it wrong too.

Heh. That’s a good correction, obvious once you think about it.
