Gisèle Lagacé, artist of the terrific webcomic Penny and Aggie, has posted an interesting story about trying out for Archie. There’s no permalink, so look on the main page under the date November 20.
I’ve been told many times that my style is very Archie-like (or if you prefer Dan DeCarlo-like) and I’ve never argued with that ’cause well, it’s true; I’m heavily influenced by Archie comics. I always wondered how I would draw Archie characters and always wanted to try it out. … I talk in the past tense here ’cause at the end of August ’06, that chance arrived. I was asked by Archie comics to try my hand at doing a little revamp of Josie and the Pussycats. I was thrilled at the idea. Now Archie comics has a house-style, so I had to keep that in mind but they seemed willing to change a bit…that’s the impression I got anyway. I spent a whole weekend working on 3 sample pages and sent them out with high hopes. Days went by…weeks went by…months went by. So here I am, almost 3 months later and nothing. Not a peep. All I can assume at this point is that I wasn’t Archie-style enough. Isn’t it funny that after being told time after time that I’m so Archie-like, that the folks at Archie “I assume” didn’t think so? I guess I’m just not ready yet for that kind of gig. Will I try again? Not sure.
Was August 2006 around the time that Archie decided to do a manga-style revamp of the Pussycats? If that’s what they were looking for, and they didn’t tell their submitters, well, no wonder there was a miscommunication. Although not responding at all to someone who submitted based on an invitation is rude and unprofessional. (Alternately, Archie could have requested some ideas and then picked a manga-ish one after someone else suggested it.)
Regardless, I think Gisèle would have been a much better choice than whoever’s drawing it now. It’s not very attractive. But her pages are great! I hope she is able to try again, with better results.
