Oh yeah, vis a vis the actual comic, Alanna not wanting to have kids seems an easy out. She’s a “Strong Female” who has “Succeeded in a Male Dominated Field”. Adding “Non-breeder” to that just fulfills the cliche.

Now is he wanted to have kids, but knows she won’t, be it “Love of the Law” or supernatural concerns or “Haven’t found anyone I am willing to be a parent with” (not I did not say “find the right man”), that has drama, that makes a character. This is just a talking point.

Actually, yes, there is something fundamentally broken with you as a biological entity if you do not wish to reproduce. (“Single” is a sociology question, disconnected and even antithetical to reproduction.)

But that’s cool, because you won’t, and your flawed genes won’t effect future generations. Direct feedback loops are quite elegant in their simplicity.

Of course, it still sucks from a eugenics standpoint, because those people who choose not to have kids are most often bright, articulate, goal-oriented, and quite successful in their chosen endevours. Oh, and Johanna.

Even given that the child will be a demon later on, you can’t punish them for future actions. This is similar to the old Sci-Fi quandry about time travel. If you could go back in time to Hitler’s childhood, is it morally acceptable to kill him? I say no. Hitler as a child hasn’t done anything worthy of death. If you kill Hitler as a child then you are no morally better than Hitler.

I was wrong about this not bringing up philsophically interesting questions. So I humbly retract my previous comment to that effect.

Ed, your dodge also ignores the rules of this type of story (see also Rosemary's Baby, obviously being homaged here), where the reason for Satan wanting a child is *because* it will be demonic.

Johanna, I don’t see any difficult philosophical questions in the Supernatural Law story. Unless you believe in genetic fatalism, the child is an innocent being who has done nothing worthy of death. The parents of the child don’t determine either the moral worth or the moral destiny of the child. To say that Satan’s child will necessarily be evil is to deny freewill. Now the denial of freewill would be a philosophically interesting debate.

Thankfully it’s becomming less socially unacceptable to choose not to have children. More and more women seem to be busy doing other things. These days I hear about more guys breaking up with girl-friends and fiance’s because she doesn’t want to have children than vice versa.
