My new column at Comics Unlimited is now up. Click on the “Graphic Novels Worth Owning” banner to see my comments on four graphic novels that run the gamut, from a too-real autobiography about facing a life-threatening disease to an only-in-comics artistic tour de force.
Cancer Vixen is Marisa Acocella Marchetto’s story of her battle with breast cancer mere weeks before her wedding.
If you’re looking for an old-fashioned superhero adventure, check out Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril.
Stagger Lee, by Derek McCulloch and Shepherd Hendrix, tells the real-life history behind the song in a fascinating blend of cultural history and scandal.
David Mack’s Kabuki: Skin Deep explores a former assassin’s psychology through gorgeous multi-media images.

There must be something in the Australian water system (or what’s left of it after a three-year drought)… not only did Melbourne recently host an exhibition of Osamu Tezuka’s artwork which received serious reviews in major papers, but a longish extract from CANCER VIXEN recently appeared in the magazine published with the Saturday edition of THE AGE, one of two or three important papers in the state of Victoria (of which Melbourne is the capital). Promptly followed by several letters the next week praising the author’s attitude, sass and wit from others in the same situation. “Comics Go Overground Down Under”, maybe?

I just wanted to chime in and second that Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril reccomendation. Never read the first story? You don’t need to (I didn’t even know there was a first story at first). Not even all that interested in old-fashioned superhero adventures? Don’t worry. It’s still a good read.
