Pittsburgh Con Missing Many Guests

KC’s at the Pittsburgh comic convention this weekend. He called me yesterday to let me know how things were going (well) and mentioned that a surprising number of guests were listed as canceled.

Among the big names not attending were Michael Turner, Mike Deodato, Ethan van Sciver, Gail Simone, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner. Plus, about 10 more were noted on signage at the door that he didn’t have time to read to me.

Big names that were there were George Pérez, Adam Hughes, and Mike Grell.

I don’t know the reasons behind any of these — whether talent had last-minute conflicts or there were planning mixups or whether the convention had ever confirmed their appearances in the first place — but it’s becoming ever more difficult to provide the promised experience to paying attendees. With a busy, growing convention season, guests find it hard to balance travel schedules and getting the work done that made them desirable in the first place. Appearances build one’s celebrity, but too many risk overexposure.

“These Pittsburg guys asked if I was interested. I said sure, get back to me with the info. They jumped the gun badly and printed a flyer with my name as an attendee, without my knowledge. I found out the con was the same weekend as a Boston Library meeting where I was invited to speak.

Since then, those guys have made every effort to let people know it was their mistake, including publishing it on the front page of their website.”

I’m sure it was because Rick Olney was unable to attend.

He’s such a big wheel in comics, you know. Free Comic Book Day? That was all him.
