Why Do Conventions?

Von Allan has two must-read posts on how to evaluate convention appearances as worth your time and money. There’s a lengthy discussion of the many different reasons someone might choose to exhibit. Von’s own motivations are unusual, in that he’s not selling things but trying to gather feedback (an approach that disappointingly doesn’t appear to be working) and raise awareness of his upcoming graphic novel. There are a lot of excellent marketing points made that many publishers and creators could learn from.

Von Allan is an incredibly talented storyteller and I can’t wait for his book to come out. His insight into marketing have changed some of my views and he’s a joy to be around at the shows themselves. I just hope he continues creating and writing because I love his work.
