PR: What Not to Do: Not Knowing Your Comic Title

There’s nothing that unusual about this press release — it assumes I’m going to be a lot more interested than I am, without really giving me reason to be, and it seems to think the most tenuous connection to a well-known property will sell comics. That’s sadly common. What I’m laughing at it for is much more basic.

Here’s the press release, accompanied by the promo cover:

JIM SMITH’S CHESTACLESE SKETCHBOOK Vol. 1 SHIPS JUNE 2007 FROM ASYLUM PRESS

Chestaclese

Jim Smith, co-creator of Ren and Stimpy, The Ripping Friends, and many other Spumco cartoons has inked a deal with Asylum Press to publish a series of sketchbooks.

This 72-page extravaganza featuring rare sketches and designs for Jim Smith’s upcoming cartoon CHESTACLESE. Also featured are Ripping Friends and Weekend Pussy Hunt drawings, storyboards, background design. Full color section features never before seen concept art. A must for all Spumco fans. This book will have a 8 page color section featuring rare concept drawings and all new comic book art.

CHESTACLESE SKETCHBOOK QUOTES:

“A new high water-mark for over-glorified doodles!”
–Jim Smith (Ren And Stimpy,The Ripping Friends, My Little Pony, Alvin & the Chipmunks)

“Chestacles rocks! It’s the Flintstones on acid. I can’t wait to see it revered alongside Jim Smith’s other icon of animation “Ren & Stimpy.”
–Robert Steven Rhine Publisher / Deaditor-In-Chief Girls and Corpses Magazine

Have you noticed yet? The cover art and promo quote spell the title one way; the text another. Can you get any more unprofessional?
