I've been picking up a lot of these kinds of reprint collections in an effort to get a better grasp of a DC comics that no longer existed by the time I began picking up superhero comics. As much as DC is now referencing its Bronze and Silver Age past, these volumes are some fun to read, but, yeah... the death of Batman certainly wasn't the earth shattering epic moment I'd expected.

It's interesting that DC still seems to push moments like this upon readers as an idea seems ultimately more interesting than the actual execution.

About 15 years ago I hunted down most of the JSA issues that I didn't have from when I read and loved them as a kid, with the exception of the Death of Batman issue, which I must have lost or traded and was impossible to find. My favorites were always the early issues by Wally Wood, etc., but never really liked the Joe Staton issues that make up this volume much. So when I finally re-read the Death of Batman story after more than 25 years, to say I was disappointed is an understatement. For some reason I remembered this big, grand, heroic death, but what I found was anything but. It almost makes me wonder if it pays to revisit things we loved as a child, as we're bound to be disappointed. Though there is always the rare exception.

Anyway, thanks for the spot-on review.
