The title &quot;classic American meal&quot; caught my attention here, since in New Zealand we usually refer to our classic meal as &quot;meat and three veg&quot; :-) 
Traditionally mutton (although these days, chicken pork or beef), potatoes (mashed), and probably carrots and one of peas/cauli/cabbage.  Traditionally all boiled, or on Sundays, roasted.
