Looking at the Minx sample pages, I can imagine that the books can be a tough sell.

Dirk makes a number of excellent points. I agree that it's very important to take into account Hibbs' biases (as Hibbs himself acknowledges) and that Hibbs' conclusions about bookstore sales, especially in the area of "art comics", are logically suspicious. Dirk's key point about Minx is this: "In reality, it's going to take a slow and painful campaign spanning a number of years for the Minx line to finally find its target demographic," and that's true. I think it's also the case that it's not a foregone conclusion; it's possible that Minx won't ever find that demo, or that it won't click with them before DC gives up and pulls the plug.

Oh, and I love the Spam sketch metaphor.

Johanna, I'd be curious to get your perspective on Dirk Deppey's response to Hibbs' essay:

Granted, I think Dirk reacts a tad more strongly due to his Fantagraphics connection, but otherwise I find it to be an interesting counterpoint--particularly in considering Minx.
