I know it's tough to ask for a second look if someone isn't grabbed with the first volume, but Chris and I made great strides in the second volume and address some of the points you bring up. The biggest lesson I learned from my first full-length graphic novel is to get the setup done quicker so that the complications that I have to say "check out volume 2 to see!" would have been in chapter 2 instead. In retrospect, the reveal at the end of volume 1 would have been the end up chapter 1.
