Leighton, I’m glad you enjoyed the exhibit. I missed the connection to Spirited Away, that’s an excellent point. Now, I’m going to have to watch the film again.

I went to this exhibit today and enjoyed it greatly. Not only did I enjoy the parallels to Hiroshige’s famous prints, but I also noticed the strong similarity to Hayao Miyazki’s wonderful anime, Spirited Away. The look of the demons and other creatures in the movie certainly appeared to have been influenced by Mizuki or to have some common antecedents.

I looked at the copy of the book at the exhibition, but am also stuck that I can’t read Japanese. But I was also disappointed that the size of the reproductions was surprisingly small (maybe 4″ x 7″ each), so it was hard to see the detail and the wonderful woodcut color tones.
