I am glad to have a change from the standard Thanksgiving date, and I'm hopeful this will mean some different talent will be able to make it. I love the standard MOC creators that attend, but it really would be nice to mix it up a little for a change.

Funny... I've lived in Columbus for 9 years but, since I'm nobody's idea of a football fan (let alone a Buckeye fan), I had not taken the game into account. I just checked and the Bucks will be playing out of town that Saturday, so that's good... but the promoters should probably be prepared for a 3-4 hour "dead zone" while the game is happening. Frankly, they would be smart to set up a room at the con with the game playing on a big screen and publicize that they will do so. That will help draw con-goers who otherwise might be on the fence to the con and keep them there.

At this time, I don't know if I'll be involved with Mid-Ohio-Con, but I do know the Columbus Convention Center - the only venue big enough for the show and with easy access to good hotels and restaurants - is booked pretty solid during the year. In addition, no promoter in his right mind would schedule the show for the same weekend as an Ohio State University football game. OSU is only a couple miles away and the hotels and restaurants get booked up. I doubt anyone is happy about being on the same weekend as either SPX or Fallcon, but, when you're dealing with the Columbus Convention Center, you take what you can get.

I'm glad you pick SPX, because I love seeing you and Jane.

Well darn! I actually really like Mid Ohio, and went as often as I could, even with the Thanksgiving cross-over. But given a choice between the two, SPX wins hands down. Although Mid-Ohio IS geographically a little more accessible for me. Poo!

Johanna - I think your suspicion is correct, but I'm not losing too much sleep over it. I live in Columbus and haven't attended in five years - partly because of the Thanksgiving conflict and partly because the same pros attend year after year with little deviation. Again, that's the holiday weekend to blame, with most pros opting out due to the conflict while the regulars (I call them the "CBG Crew" - look at a list of past attendees and you'll figure it out)regard it as the yearly reunion of their little in-group. Nothing wrong with it but some new blood will be nice. Plus, it'll be easier (and easier to justify to my wife) to do some shopping without the spectre of Christmas looming... My brother-in-law and I are both "retired" comic shop managers, live in Columbus, and will be attending for the first time in years.

I suspect another affected class would be small press creators for whom Mid-Ohio is their local con but whose material is well-suited to SPX.

I wonder how much crossover there really is between what I've always taken as a very mainstream comics convention (mid-ohio) and a very indy/small press/zine convention (SPX).

On first thought, the people this would seem to effect the most are the comics press, who would likely want to report on both.
