Right now, I am supposed to be recommending graphic novels for a comic book store’s customers. I’m having the hardest time doing so — I’ve got lots of things here I want to recommend, but they’re

… self-published webcomic collections, which aren’t carried through distributors and so can’t be profitably resold through stores.

… manga, which sells through bookstores, and the customers of the comic stores I know just aren’t interested. (More and more, I’m coming to accept this as the way it is instead of thinking comic stores need to try harder. The bookstores have captured this product line.)

… preview copies of works that will be released later this summer, so no point in talking about them yet (although the advance notice is much appreciated and some I’m very eager to dive into).

… very small press books, which I’m not sure can successfully be reordered through Diamond.

Yargh! Sometimes I wish I was more excited about superheroes! Seriously, I bring this up because it suddenly struck me how many options there were outside the traditional direct market.

which is why the direct market as we know it either has to change or die a slow, hideous, probably overdue death. The days of the Diamond monopoly should be over.

You could recommend them here :)

  3. Johanna Says:

Well, yes, but not until I get this other project done first. :)

How about All Star Superman or Silver Surfer: Requiem?

I don’t read JMS work, but A-S S has potential — once the book is actually released. :) Thanks for the suggestion.

Hmm.. yeah I don’t know what to recommend for a comic shop audience especially from a superhero perspective.

The Order’s first TPB was good, but I’ve heard the ending of the series was bad.

The first Booster Gold tpb was really fun.

Brubaker’s Daredevil and Captain America have been pretty nice.

After that? Pfft I haven’t really read much that I could really go “yeah, that’s good.”

You should definitely read Requiem it’s great. It reminds me of A-S S. I think issues 1-6 are out in book form.
