I really love this, really–I hope you get a lot of entries, and can make a gallery. I do however have to debate the idea that Jaime Reyes doesn’t have enough character yet for formal wear. In fact a few weeks ago I blogged about how I want to ask him to prom. Even though he’s fictional, and I’m 31. But still. Blue Beetle, in a modified blue leisure suit. Think about it.

I love Billy’s stiffness in the first one.

For black DC Heroes – John Irons, Black Lightning, Cyborg, Mister Terrific

Hispanic is harder, ’cause they’re usually drawn white. Kyle Rayner qualifies, though.

I can’t think of much for Asian, Native American or Middle Eastern.

I’m amused that the two posters have two different Robins. Is he wearing a tuxedo T-shirt in the second poster?

I really like the all-black version of the second poster–it’s a nice contrast to Hughes’ original poster, with the women all in white. Is there a way you could link it to the front page, Johanna? It needs to be seen by folks who don’t read the comments.

Man, I wish I could draw. :-/

Well, I wouldn’t pick him to demonstrate the DCU’s diversity, since he keeps getting drawn white, but I took the man on the right in Jeff’s picture who you have labelled Wally West as Connor Hawke.

Sorry, Paul! Sloppy cut’n'paste on my part. It’s been fixed.

Tomo, it’s up to the artist to pick the characters. And yes, this is an area where DC is still a bit behind the times. You could choose the current Atom (Asian) or Blue Beetle (Hispanic) to add diversity, but both of those don’t have quite as much personality yet to be distinctive in evening wear, I fear.

That second image is cool and it kind of modernises those characters at the same time!

My question, though, is who got to choose those specific characters? Because that line-up shows how un-diverse and lacking DC is. One non-white hero is all they got? (I’m not talking about the green one).

Great looking entries, but they lack of the unifying look that helped the DCU Women poster look so sharp.

However, I do love the decision in the first example to put one of the characters in formal military dress.

Great job Paul! I love it that we both have Oliver Queen in a vest, I’m not sure what that says about the character but it’s awesome. I love the spats, too, I wish I’d thought of that. Kinda neat that we both have Hal Jordan (test pilot) shorter than the others — great minds think alike!

As for Brainiac Five in purple, hey, what can I say, he stole it from the Hulk. At least Querl changes his pants every now and again, which is more than the Not-So-Jolly Green Giant can claim.
