"I found the point about Comic Con-goers being notoriously cheap rather interesting, specifically when it was backed up with numbers. A biotech conference pulls in 12 times as much for the city per attendee?!?!!"

This seems to be a bit of conventional (no pun intended) wisdom as to the difference between trade shows (like, presumably that biotech conference) and consumer shows (like SDCC), at least according to the insights of New York Comic Con and Book Expo America show manager Lance Fensterman that Tom Spurgeon posted at http://tinyurl.com/3sz5nv

I suppose that explains why it's been so easy to get restaurant reservations the last couple of years. Everyone's going to Ralphs instead.

It also explains why the city seems to have so little respect for the con -- it snarls traffic and ties up public transportation, it's got all those weird comics people, and those weirdos don't bring in as much money as they should. (Come to think of it, they're probably spending most of it at the con itself.)
