What's a 'squee', Rich used that in Lying in the Gutters this week, too.

Anyway, interesting review. I tried issue 1 of Secret Invasion, and that's two minutes I'll never get back . . .

I am trying the odd Mighty and New Avengers tie-in, depending on my interest in the characters. Elektra? Pass.

As for 'really bad DCs' I think the proportion of bad to good is better at DC right now, Marvel is far too mired in years of crossovers. Call me when the House of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion etc is over.

Yeah, Captain Britain. Also all sorts of “squee” moments for anyone who followed the Alan Moore/Alan Davis/Chris Claremont Captain Britain/Excalibur sagas.

You're right about tie-ins. I had the same experience -- I recently tried to read the current Iron Man series (the one that's now "Director of SHIELD") from the beginning. Once past the first storyline, it got very tiring to see stories started but never finished (because the conclusion was in some special event series). It made for some very disjointed plotting.

I also enjoy team books. Seeing many of my favorite characters together - and watching them interact with each other is great fun.

Regarding Secret Invasion, Final Crisis, and other "event" crossovers. I won't even begin these stories anymore. While I'm sure I'd enjoy some of the comics, buying the main mini-series and key tie-in issues alone (not counting the minor ones) has become far too expensive. I'm one who likes the whole story - not just the gist if it.

My distaste for these "events" has grown to include how they needlessly (and gratuously) intrude on titles I enjoy in order to have yet another "tie-in". Sometimes I'll stick with the title until the crossover has ended.

However, there have been times when "my" series has become a more important tie-in and would require the purchase of the main "event" series (thereby leading to other tie-ins) to fully understand the story. In cases like these, I have elected to simply drop the affected titles, and I usually don't return.

This has led to the point where I only buy a few titles from Marvel and DC each month - where at one point I was buying more than half of their titles.

Oh well, it's nice to have the money to spend on other things - like food, and gas.

I admit to enjoying JSA quite a lot, but then I don't read any related minis or series. So, the team is all I know.

Since I was always a fan of Captain America and of some of the other Avengers' members individually, I overthink how they could possibly have time to have their solo adventures and the team romps. Same goes for JLA.

Hmm I thought Bendis's obsession with Spider-Woman was because he grew up watching those fun Spider-Woman cartoons I did.

I wonder if Marvel will do a series for this detailing each story in order in a reprint series. Like they did for Civil War?

I don't think Marvel will screw Brubaker's Cap like that. Otherwise they'd just use the Cap from the Alex Ross project.

Scott, I still love (well-done) team books best, just because more options usually means more nuanced characterization. (In the most reductionist terms, for example, instead of The Woman, you can have different personalities of women.) But at its base, it depends on the creative talent.

I'm also quite enjoying the Secret Invasion tie-in over in Captain Britain And MI13 (only got #1 atm but #2-3 are in the mail). Aside from nice character moments and big-scale action, there's the quite fun idea that the Skrulls are invading Britain because all the magic and mystical power-sources in Marvel-Britain count as an enemy resource they need to capture or destroy. (I also like Home Secretary Jacqui Smith secretly having been an evil country-undermining Skrull all along!)

The bit I find odd is that this is called "Secret Invasion". The Skrulls openly attacked in #1, it's not exactly a secret anymore.

In Wisconsin, and I'm just hearing about it now? ;)

Oddly the combination of re-reading Busiek/Perez and Bendis' Avengers in short order caused me to part with most of my Avengers-related books.

I still have a few from the first Shooter era, but they served to remind me just how contrived team books can be (Fantastic Four being the exception since they are family first).

This is a long way from when I first started collecting as a kid and thought that more heroes equalled a better story/value.

Perhaps it is another variation of event-fatigue in that I'd like some good, small stories with a few well-written characters.
