I love Yotsuba&!. With so many doom-and-gloom manga and “revelations” these days, I adore this simple, infectious and yet inspiring book. It’s an understated brilliance.

Whenever I get tired of discouraged, I pick up this book and become joyful despite myself. There’s always some joy, and Yotsuba&! proves it.

It seems only ADV is having trouble putting out the volumes, as Kurokawa (for France) seems to be sticking to its release schedule.

It isn’t fair if ADV is just deciding on stopping one section of their business since they need to focus elsewhere, since the readers are left wanting…

Yotsuba&! is one of my favorite comics ever – of any kind of comics. Even though it is set in contemporary suburban Japan, there are still so many elements that resonate with my childhood in Kawasaki more than 45 years ago. And what I find wonderful is that a couple of third grade boys at the small Catholic school where I’m the librarian have begged me for more Yotsuba&! (I donated the first volume to the library a year ago.) I’ve promised them more, so I better look for it in the local bookstore – school starts in less than a month!

I’d rate YOTSUBA alongside Calvin & Hobbes for sheer charm, exuberance (albeit of a different order/energy) and flat out loveliness. However, if ADV is on the skids, I hope that whatever Japanese company licenses the property gives the rights to some other publisher ASAP. Vol 6 is, what, a year off schedule? It’s not fair to readers (and readers to be) that ADV is just sitting on the rights (or at very least botching their release schedule).

What with the delays, I wound up getting vols. 6 and 7 in Japanese. You might be pleased (or frustrated) to know they’re as good as ever, and feature pulse-pounding recycling, cake-making, cycling, milk-drinking and farm-visiting action.

This is one of the very best manga series ever, a real all-ages pleaser. I hope ADV continues publishing new volumes and if they decide not to, some other company picks it up.

Given that almost everything is a brand new experience to Yotsuba, and that her reactions are either extreme excitement or utter disappointment, with little or no gray space in between, she’s basically like a toddler, only more aware and articulate. Because of this, it’s very easy to see a lot of my 3 year old son in her character, and that only makes me appreciate the series even more.
