My Favorite Part of the Olympics

My favorite part of the Olympics? The mascots! They’re adorable, and such great character design. It’s in keeping with the country’s history and tradition.

I was most impressed by the various levels of meaning. Each one has a different Olympic color, represents a different animal (or the Olympic Flame), symbolizes a different natural element, has a different blessing (such as luck or passion), represents a different competitive category, and when you arrange the first halves of their names, the resulting phrase says, “Welcome to Beijing”. I don’t know how you’d even do such a multi-layered thing in English.

You might want to check out the latest issue of Print for some very interesting subtext in the Beijing Games’ symbology, Johanna. Trying to recall the cover date of the issue I’m thinking of here…

Finally refreshed my memory: it’s the August 2008 issue. Still in stock at several news-stands in Ottawa.

I agree totally and in fact wrote a Facebook Note with a similar sentiment (but more long winded) about a week ago.
