Oh, a raccoon! Yes, that suits the character well, thank you for the explanation.

The local zoo has a red panda, and I remember one of the docents saying that it gets the name more from its markings that anything else, and that it's more closely related to a raccoon than a real panda.

For what it's worth.

Wonderful review! Kung Fu Panda was a very nice surprise, a nice change from the watch it/forget it quality of many child-oriented films. The 2d opening dream sequence animation was something that I can only call inspiring. Sounds like the dvd set might be worth picking up - I know my, um, son will really be into learning how to draw the characters and learn kung fu moves.

The humor in Kung-Fu Panda all arises from solid story and character work. As such, it's a great break from the let's-throw-in-every-pop-culture-reference-possible style that is growing ever more tired in the Shrek series and which is being badly aped in things like Space Chimps. As someone getting dragged to movies by my turns-four-tomorrow daughter, going to the theater and finding that it's something like Kung Fu Panda is a great relief.
