Around 5th grade, this was probably my favorite movie. To the point where I had an almost complete set of the Topps movie cards. And a cassette of the soundtrack. And yeah, the Dolby/”Cherry Bomb” songs were all pretty good. I actually found an MP3 of the theme song a while back, and it holds up surprisingly well. The George Clinton bit helps.

This movie tested my fan limits, though, because I remember sitting in the theatre thinking “Man, this is REALLY bad…but, I’ve got to stay long enough to hear the Dolby songs.” 108 minutes later, I staggered from the theatre, thinking “Man, Thomas, I hope they paid you a ton of money up front.”

He has a good humor about it now, and says he had fun rehearsing Lea Thompson and the other two “bandmates” on how to “rock out”, but it’s evident he knew this was a turkey (some pun intended).

Holy crap, I thought I was the only one that loved Thomas Dolby. I sometimes thing Hyperactive should be played at my funeral.

The only reason I have any connection with this movie is Thomas Dolby’s part in the soundtrack. He composed all the music that Lea Thompson’s band plays.

It’s also coming out on DVD on March 10. Say what you will of the movie, but the theme song is one of the great “lost” Thomas Dolby tracks of the era.
