Fleischer Superman Cartoons New Release

Warner Home Video has announced a new, authorized release of the Fleischer Superman cartoons from the early 1940s. Although they’re in public domain, so you can get copies of them at varying quality cheaper, a cleaned-up, well-presented version would be welcome. The two-disc package is due April 7 at a list price of $26.99, containing all 17 cartoons plus 2 featurettes.

This is great news, because the last attempt at a quality release had horrible audio and didn’t clean up the video at all. These are great cartoons and deserve a top notch release.

Unfortunately, I don’t see ‘cleaned-up’ or ‘well-presented’ anywhere on the press release. I see ‘authorized’ which means they can crank the price, and ‘Technicolor’ which is sometimes code for ‘it’s supposed to look like that because it’s old’.
Yes, they mention that it’s from the original masters, but that doesn’t mean the masters are in good condition, nor that they have been remastered in any way.
If this were Disney I would have high expectations, but I’ve been disappointed by WHV before. I’ll wait for some reviews before getting excited.

Ok, I might be a little too optimistic, but I’ve generally been pleased with the Warner animation quality. You could be right, but I hope you aren’t. :)
