My husband and I discovered Swingtown on Thursday nights. We instantly LOVED it. Makes you want to live in the simpler times of the 70s. I was so glad to see the Episode 1 DVD for sale and purchased it right away. Sadly, I'm just finding out that it was cancelled. It's very unfortunate.

I really dug this show. Oddly enough when I was working at the REDACTED COMPUTER STORE in L.A. a guy came in needing to put a music clip up on his ftp site so some execs could listen to it and approve it for his TV show. The music was Liz Phair. The show was SWINGTOWN. It was fun later to see that the music got approved and the show was very well done. Sorry to see it go.

I just caught this show thru a marathon on Bravo yesterday. I missed the first five shows, but raptly watched the rest. I was thrilled, cause I thought it was a really well-written, and especially, well-acted show. I found myself getting pissed at CBS for not giving it more of a platform, cause I think it would have caught on, especially with the world being in the state it's in today. I think people think it's very "Melrose Place", but it was more like "thirtysomething '76" to me.

I'm sad it won't continue, but I'm glad I finally discovered it.

I, too, enjoyed this series for the female characters. I really, really liked how we saw Trina and Janet becoming friends without either one changing their views on sexuality (admittedly, I'm not finished with the series... still). Neither has a revelation that their initial disapproval of the other person was wrong, they just realize that there's more to the other person than they first thought. I wouldn't have been surprised if the show turned into a battle of fuddy-duddy Janet and cool, liberated Trina fighting over Molly, but it was far more complex and rewarding.

I like, too, that it's a show that depicted the 70s as a time full of new possibilities (especially for the women of Swingtown) instead of the usual view of it being an era of gas lines, discos, recession* and tacky design.

* Which Swingtown does touch upon but (from what I saw) used it to explore how one couple dealt with changing gender expectations.
