[...] Reflections of a Rookie Reviewer by Ed Sizemore [...]

My husband, Bob, was a school teacher for many years and often I worked as a volunteer with his students. It was quite funny as the kids called me “Jan.” So, for many students we were Jan and Mr. Klump. But now, even most of our students who had to call us Mr. and Mrs. Klump have learned to say Jan and Bob.

Do let me know if you get your folks to read even ONE book.

You’ve encouraged me to give one more try with my parents, but it does feel like tilting at windmills. If I have sucess, I’ll let you know.

It is difficult for us “old folks” to grasp the manga style. I’ve always been one who wants to understand what my children like in reading — even if it isn’t my style. I wasn’t all that excited when they went through the Anne Rice vampire stage, but I read them all. :)

I remember my mother reading an author once that I liked, and although she wasn’t taken with the author, she enjoyed understanding me better by reading what spoke to me.

Could you get one of your parents to try one book? Maybe you’ll have to settle for niece/nephews. They are a good source.

Those are both great series. I’m glad you like them. I was telling Melinda I wish I could get my parents to try manga, but both are pretty set in their ways when it comes to reading. I can take comfort that my niece and both my nephews enjoy manga.

Melinda has loaned me Hikaru No Go and xxxHolic.
She has another series she thinks I will like, but I’ve forgotten which one that is.

Thank you for your kind words. I always enjoy talking shop with you. It really does help me when I get to see the process other people go through in writing their reviews. Also nice to know I’m not the only one pulling my hair out to get my thoughts on paper.

As even more of a rookie, I found this really inspiring. I, too, am really enjoying learning more about manga and about myself as a reader, and am thrilled with the opportunity to improve my writing. Reviewing has been more rewarding than I ever expected, and in ways I could not have fathomed.

You are a reviewer whose work I enjoy and look up to a lot, as you know, and this was a treat to read.
