Webcomic Economics

Jeph Jacques, creator of the addictive weekdaily strip Questionable Content, has a great analysis of how webcomics make money as he responds to this inaccurate statement and many more:

Not to belittle web-only comic artists, but when their income is derived from t-shirts, it makes them salesmen first, artists second.

It’s must reading for anyone concerned about the comic industry as more creators consider online distribution for their work.

As the funny pages disappear many are going to find the only way they can continue to get their comics out to their audience is through webcomics. And if these creators plan on doing this as their living they’re going to have to start generating income by any means necessary because there is no longer anyone handing you a check for your comic. Those willing to adapt will have a chance to survive. Those too noble to scrap for every internet dollar available will see their dream of being a comic strip artist disappear.
