Best Video Game Ever: Fool’s Errand

The only video game I’ve ever adored was Cliff Johnson’s Fool’s Errand. It was a quest puzzle game, based around the iconography of the Tarot. I remember spending Thanksgiving holiday in 1987 in front of my Macintosh (the SE, with the tiny little fishbowl black-and-white screen) trying to discover more map pieces and figure out how it all came together. Wonderful time!

Now comes the exciting news that the sequel, The Fool and His Money, is going to be shipping Real Soon Now. Of course, he’s said that for something like two years (he’s been working on the game for six), but there are 11 teaser puzzles available at that link to whet your interest.

Even better, if you’ve never experienced FE or Johnson’s other games, 3 in Three or At the Carnival (Puzzle Gallery), you can download them all for free from his site. Don’t do it unless you have some time!

Oh yes, the Fools Errand. I remember being totally addicted to it in the late 80s. I also remember that the only friend of mine to ever finish it cheated by using res-edit to find the answers to the puzzles he couldn’t solve.

Oooh, that’s devious. I was lucky in that several other people were playing it at the same time, so we could swap hints and such.

I think I solved that (along with my wife) without the help of ResEdit, but it took some time.

Glad to hear the news of another iteration of the game, and even the possibility of running the old one in emulation so that I can share the experience with my kids.
