To promote The Archies Greatest Hits comic collection, Archie Comics has posted 15 MP3s of Archies music (links/files no longer available). While “Sugar, Sugar” is the obvious hit, I’ve always liked “Melody Hill”, the B-side; it was also available on the back of cereal boxes. (Can you imagine cutting out a cardboard 45 to get the latest single?)
“Jingle Jangle” is different for featuring a female singer, Toni Wine, as lead. She uses two accents to play both Betty and Veronica. “Feelin’ So Good (SKOOBY DOO)” was the band’s first single, but it wasn’t a hit. And notice the phonetic mention of Archie’s biggest animated rival at a time when the two shows were battling it out on Saturday mornings. I can’t really visualize a girlfriend named that, though.
“Yummy Yummy Yummy” actually isn’t by the Archies, but the Ohio Express, and “Lay a Little Lovin’ on Me” is by Robin McNamara. Most people lump all bubblegum together anyway, since most of the bands were made up of faceless studio musicians, so it’s possible that these tracks were included because some people worked on both, but I don’t know any specific details. (And of course, I wouldn’t know any of this without KC telling me about all this history.)
