Blood: The Last Vampire
May 17, 2009

Blood The Last Vampire

If you ever thought Buffy the Vampire Slayer would be even cooler if Buffy was a Japanese schoolgirl doing stylized wirework martial arts, have I got the film for you.

Blood: The Last Vampire is about a schoolgirl who’s more than human, a samurai, and out to kill “the deadliest vampire of all” with the help of The Council. It’s based on an anime film from 2000 and set on a U.S. military base. I can’t find an official release date (never a good sign) other than “this summer”.

Do you think there’s an audience for this? There already seem to be a lot of action movies due out this year; will this find an audience in a crowded market? I find the tagline “Now that she’s here, there will be blood” laughably cheesy.

The anime movie it’s based on is quite good. Don’t know if this live action remake will compare, but at least it should find an audience among otaku.

Yes, there is an audience for this movie: ME! ;)

Oh there is ABSOLUTELY an audience for it! Depending on how good it is, of course, but the original movie was quite excellent and I’m pretty sure there are very few people who wouldn’t go see a movie about teenaged girls killing vampires with swords, honestly. Cheesy tagline aside I think the film definitely has some non-otaku attraction to it, so I hope it will be good and do well.

Jun Ji Hyun (the girl in the poster) is a fairly popular actress/model in South Korea. I think her popularity peaked in around early 2000s with the hit movie My Sassy Girl.

This is suppose to be billed as her North American debut but I don’t think it’ll make much money. There’s been no marketing for it whatsoever. Then again it seems US producers have a hard time figuring out what to do with Asian properties.
