Bluewater Continues Milking Politics With Dog Comic

After riding a publicity wave with their Female Force line of comics, covering such popular names as Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, Bluewater announced the male-focused Political Power line. It launches in July with an issue covering Colin Powell, to be followed in August with President Barack Obama and September with Vice-President Joe Biden.
But that’s not enough! Also in September comes Puppy Power: Bo Obama, the comic book story of the President’s dog. I kind of admire the demented determination to keep milking this political trend until it’s dead, buried, and revived as a zombie.

Has Bluewater paid everybody that worked for them?

I’m looking forward to the eventual comic about the White House vegetable garden.

I think Obama Zombies will be a huge hit.

There is the whole untappped story goldmine of the Obama girls’ wooden swing set (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/04/obama-surprises-daughters_n_172009.html). “Sasha’s First Splinter” would warrant at the very least a three-issue arc, straight to TPB soon after initial sales, in the hands of a strong writer.

My readers are so much funnier than I am!

Unfortunately, Thom is not joking:

And I’m not sure whether the others are, too.

Unless this dog goes on Green Beret missions, I can’t gather the requisite amount of care.

The jaded part of me is tired of the cashing in on all things Obama. Another part of me hopes that this is insanely successful so pet/animal lovers can have a line of comics devoted to famous animals and first pets of the past. Isn’t it a shame that we really don’t have comics with real animals in them anymore?
Oh Rin Tin Tin and Lassie, why have you forsaken us?

VT: Spooky! Truth is stranger than humor. And I do agree that while Obama-mania is overplayed, I would love to see more doggie comics.

Johanna Says:
“…Bluewater announced the male-focused Political Power line…”
someone at Bluewater Says:
“…Future issues of the series will include Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, Alexander Hamilton, Mae Ella Nolan (the first woman elected in her own right to the House of Representatives) and Nancy Pelosi….”
Does it count as male-focused if some but <50% of the featured figures are female?
VT Says:

“And I’m not sure whether the others are, too.”
I, in response to this, Said:
“Johanna Says:
“‘I’m just a little tired, personally, of this ‘let’s exploit the President’ approach to marketing.’
“But wait, there’s more:

Johanna Replied:
“At least those are bringing something new to the table beyond ‘let’s stick the President’s face on something!’ And they look funny.”

I havent bought any of the 2008-9 political comic books, but I admit that if it really comes out, I might just get the dog comic. I’d be surprised if these books lasted longer than “Reagan’s Raiders”, but who knows…..

I asked my LCS how well Obama merch does for them. They said that while other political books from Blue Water do not sell well (they only had copies of the Palin book because two people ordeed it and then never purchased them)… but just about anything with Obama on the cover sells really well for them. So, there appears to be some real payoff for all these companies so far.
