Comic Books Contribute to Naval Academy Recruiting Campaign

Bravo Zulu

The United States Naval Academy is adding the comic Bravo Zulu to their Fulfill Your Destiny recruiting campaign. The effort is intended to increase the number of female and minority applicants, and so far, they’re attributing an increase of almost 50% since last year to the campaign. (Although I suspect the continually declining economy may have played a role as well.)

Bravo Zulu, which means Well Done, was created to educate young people about the opportunities at the Academy and in the Navy. It joins 30- and 60-second TV ads that aired last fall. The story, written by Deborah Franco, who created and directed the ads, features five midshipmen interacting with Navy heroes of the past and future. The 12-page comics will be distributed in high schools for free beginning next month.
