Archie Gets New CEO, Founder’s Son Jon Goldwater

Archie Comics has announced that the son of company founder John L. Goldwater, Jon Goldwater, has become CEO. He “looks forward to expanding the role of his family’s company, Archie Comics Publications, in prominence in the comic book medium as well as other media” and “plans on bringing the kids from Riverdale to a larger multi-media audience.”

Mentioned are not just the usual characters but “other long-standing Archie properties such as Katy Keene, Lil Jinx, the Red Circle Heroes, Sabrina, Josie & the Pussycats, Cosmo the Merry Martian, Pat the Brat, Wilbur Wilkins, Bingo Wilkins, Suzie and Ginger Snapp, just to name a few.” Wow, some there I’ve never even heard of! The press release continues:

Jon Goldwater purchased an ownership interest in the company with the intent of making Archie Comics [an] entertainment powerhouse. In his first few days as CEO he has already started negotiations on projects that will be announced shortly, including a big budget Archie feature film, a new Archie animated project, a Katy Keene television program, and a major music deal for the Archies.

Impressive, if all that happens. I know they’ve been pushing the music connections lately, with more stories about the gang as a band.

I’m severely disengaged from “pop music” as pertains to what is actually currently “popular” but it would seem that the time is right for the Archies to make a comeback of sorts. Jonas Brothers, etc… of course Archie Publications is no Disney but we’re pretty much talking about the same thing.

  2. Johanna Says:

Oh, nice comparison. I like a lot of “bubblegum” pop myself.

  3. Bill D. Says:

I wonder what effect any plans he has for the Red Circle characters would have on their current DC revival?

  4. jdh417 Says:

It’s good to see someone in charge that is enthusiastic about the Archie characters. Marvel has said (and apparently their financials back it up) that they are primarily a character licensing company. DC doesn’t even have to make that statement; it’s obvious.

It’s hard to say if this multi-media push will be good for the comics. While non-stop, lousy, mega-crossover events have ruined Marvel and DC comics, they do look good and there is some occasional good innovation with the characters. With Archie Comics… in some cases, they have no where to go but up in terms of quality.

The comic book art form should never go away, but time may passing the “floppy” format by. I wouldn’t be surprised if new guy transfers the comics to another medium and/or format fairly soon.

The possibility of seeing some new TV shows and movies is kind of exciting. The Sabrina show was pretty good (though the comic book may have just been canceled.) I could totally see Katy Keene as a Disney show.

  5. DaMan Says:

Yeah, sure is nice to see the queer coming to Archie Comics…I’ll make sure i never purchase another product from is publisher. Jon’s grandkids must be queer.

  6. Johanna Says:

And we have a winner! Congrats for being the first bigot to comment. I love the way that a desire for fairness and inclusion couldn’t be the motive in your world — it’s gotta be a relative. (Having just met Mr. Goldwater at C2E2, I would guess that, if he does have grandkids, which I doubt, they’re not even teenagers yet.)

  7. GIVE ME A BREAK!!! Says:

Jon Goldwater – Give me a break!!! The Archie Comics DON’T need a GAY character added to ANY comics!!! I am so sick and tired of you, teachers, authors, media, and any other whinney little group who have too much time on their hands, shoving the gay lifestyle down the throats of my/our children!!!!! Leave the kids alone!!!!!!! The gay’s are clueless, that what you are doing, you do in the name of money, and greed! There is soo much garbage introduced to our children everywhere they turn, get a spine Jon and give the Archie comics some moral value instead!!!!!!

  8. Johanna Says:

Yeah, it sucks when educated people are inclusive and balanced in their approach to the world, doesn’t it?

It fascinates me that, to bigots, acknowledging that gays exist and are normal people becomes “shoving their lifestyle down our throats.” Have you READ an Archie comic? With its love triangle, Archie is much more accurately said to be shoving heterosexuality down our throats.

  9. jim Says:

Johanna, If you don’t like Archie the way it is–DON’T READ IT!! AND Don’t tell ME this isn’t being shoved down our throats!! That’s EXACTLY what’s happening!! When you take something, ANYTHING–ANYTHING AT ALL, that has been perfectly fine and been around for OVER HALF A CENTURY, and change it without any concern for the people that have patronized said item and what THEIR feelings are—THAT’S SHOVING DOWN OUR THROATS!!!
Gays are entitled to their lifestyle, movies, comic books,WHATEVER. If they choose that lifestyle–FINE!!! I DON’T!! Just as gays have their rights–I HAVE MINE!! AND MINE ARE BEING INFRINGED UPON!! GAYS–GET YOUR OWN COMIC BOOK!! I AM ENTITLED TO MY COMIC BOOKS THE WAY I LIKE THEM!! I WOULDN’T GO INTO A GAY COMIC BOOK AND SAY ‘GAY IS WRONG’. BY THE SAME TOKEN–don’t be going into OUR comic books saying ‘gay is ok’. You have YOUR lifestyle that your entitled to if you want. I have MY lifestyle THAT IS MY RIGHT!!! JON GOLDWATER–I HOPE YOU’RE READING THIS! YOU DIDN’T NEED TO CHANGE ARCHIE—YOUR DAD HAD IT RIGHT–FOR OVER A HALF CENTURY!! YOU ARE DOING YOUR DAD’S FANS A GRAVE INJUSTICE! Your dad had RESPECT for us!! EVIDENTLY YOU DO NOT!! I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER PRODUCT FROM YOU AND MY CHILDREN WILL NOT BE BUYING MY GRANDCHILDREN OR STEP-GRANDCHILDREN ANY OF YOUR PRODUCT EITHER!
One last thing before I go–You don’t know how close I came to BURNING MY ARCHIE collection, one at a time on facebook and youtube. That would have been a statement because ALL MY COMICS ARE VINTAGE STARTING AT ’75 GOING BACK TO ’48 OR ’49!! My wife stopped me though because she pointed out–why destroy a good man’s work because of his son??!!

  10. Johanna Says:

Do you realize that you’re talking to the only major comic reviewer who regularly covers Archies? I read the books all the time. And I welcome stories that are a bit different from those “half a century” old — because that gets boring quickly. If you want material that never changes, you shouldn’t be reading ongoing comics. Stick to your old issues.

Your bigotry is boring, and your “us vs. them” attitude hateful. These are not “your” comics — they’re for all kinds of people, black, white, gay, straight, Christian, Hindu, whatever.

  11. jim Says:

Totally went over your head didn’t it. You want change, start another mag. For over sixty years dad had it right. You want a gay mag, start one. It’s your right. It’s MY right not to have to be associated with it should I choose not to. Why change Archie this way?? Why can’t you just start ANOTHER MAGAZINE?? It’s because people like you want to stick it in everybody’s face. As I said, Jon Goldwater items will not be stuck IN ANY OF MY RELATIVES OR CHILDREN’S FACES ANY LONGER!! (and you know what? I am NOT the only one who feels this way)

  12. Johanna Says:

Why change Archie? Because the publisher has the right to, and he wants to speak to society today, not 50 years ago. Follow your own advice: if you don’t like it, leave. But stop yelling at people who want to live in the modern world and avoid hateful bigotry. Acknowledging the existence of people who want to live their lives (just like you do) with their families (just like you do) isn’t “sticking it in your face”. Although you’re so rabid over that metaphor, I am beginning to wonder just what you do want stuck in your face and down your throat.

  13. jim Says:

Shows where YOUR mind is at. BTW I see by the number of posts you have how big of a following you have. Seems others are paying as much attention to what you have to say as I do. I’m outta here.

  14. Johanna Says:

Well, when you decide to comment on a year-old post instead of the more current coverage of the issue, yeah, you’re not going to get a lot of other commenters. But I’m proud of my over 4,000 posts at this site, and I’m still going.

  15. Tim O'Shea Says:

Jim, your ignorance will not be missed.

  16. Thom Says:

**(and you know what? I am NOT the only one who feels this way)**

Well, there are a lot of small minded folks scared of gay people out there.

  17. Archie Attempts to Oust Co-CEO Nancy Silberkleit With Sexual Harassment Lawsuit ยป Comics Worth Reading Says:

[...] Goldwater and Silberkleit are both related to the company founders, which is what brought them to their shared leadership position. Nancy’s husband Michael passed away in 2008, while Jon’s brother Richard, son of John L. Goldwater, passed away the year before. [...]
