I gave up on the show a few seasons in, so I’ve never seen the later episodes with either Robert Downey, Jr. or James Marsden. I’m looking forward to catching up. Wow, over 5000 minutes of TV! Just what I needed.
The set contains five six-disc sets, one for each season, plus a bonus disc containing:
- a retrospective
- a TV special from season 2
- behind-the-scenes featurettes from seasons 2, 3, and 5
- a goodbye featurette from season 5
- and the Practice crossover episode (very nice to include this)
as well as a soundtrack CD of 12 songs by Vonda Shepherd, including a duet of “Chances Are” with Downey and the dancing baby theme “Hooked on a Feeling”. If you don’t want to shell out for the whole set (although $20 a season is a decent price), you can also buy the individual Season One, although there’s no guarantee all future seasons will be released.
This is the way to watch TV these days — on your own schedule, with no commercials. It’ll be fun to see how well some of these episodes hold up, and how some are distinctly of their time. I fondly remember my then-roommate, Alan Sepinwall, telling me I needed to watch the premiere with him before its debut, because it was such an interesting portrait of the modern woman. I disagreed with him that she was anything like a role model, but it did develop my taste for David E. Kelley shows.
