Reading Yotsuba&! volume 6 felt awkward mostly due to my attachment to ADV’s translation of the first 5 books. Volume 6 (and all prior volumes done by Yen Press) feels like it was written and translated for readers who are already entrenched in Japanese Anime/Manga culture, while ADV’s work doesn’t specifically cater to any particular crowd — their translation could be read easily by an English-reading child. Case in point: my niece. She loved the reading the ADV translated volumes, but didn’t quite enjoy the Yen Press version as much.

Still, I’m quite happy Yotsuba&! is back in any form. Thanks for linking those reviews and articles, Johanna.

The original has her address her dad as “to-chan”, which is pretty informal, so I see why they went for “daddy”. But having the translation changed under you is pretty much always distracting, isn’t it?

(I’ve been reading Yotsuba in Japanese for the last few volumes, so I win at authenticity)

I had the same issues with Yotsuba&! vol. 6. The humor isn’t as punchy when the sound effects are done the way they are here. The multiple translation notes for the kanji on one of Fuka’s shirts was overkill, especially since Fuka tells Yotsuba what it says in one of the panels! It seems that the translation note clutter was done to appease that sector of the manga readership that prizes “authenticity” above all else. I like authenticity myself, but I also like readability.

Also, the switch from “Dad” to “Daddy” for how Yotsuba addresses her father is going to take some getting used to. I still prefer the former, as it helps emphasize the precocious part of Yotsuba’s personality.

The source material is still great, though. The delivery story is my favorite one in this volume.
