Did you know that Daniel Waters, writer of Heathers, and Winona Ryder teamed up for another film?
It’s called Sex and Death 101. Simon Baker, star of the The Mentalist, is Roderick Blank, a successful, handsome man who winds up with a 101-item list of all the women he has and will sleep with, although his current fiance (Julie Bowen) is only #29. Ryder plays Death Nell, a woman avenging her sex by putting players and exploiters of women into comas.
The cast has some known names: Patton Oswalt is one of the mysterious men who explain the list to Blank, Neil Flynn (Scrubs) is a buddy, and Leslie Bibb (Iron Man, Popular) one of the future women. A standout is Mindy Cohn (The Facts of Life) as Blank’s assistant, who tries her best to keep him sane while he struggles with accepting and/or fighting his fate.
Waters both wrote and directed, and while it’s got his wordy, self-conscious style and playful black comedy when it comes to both death and relationships, it’s not as good as Heathers. It struggles to wrap its various threads and points of view together into something consistent. However, it is worth a Netflix, if you’re looking for something unusual to check out.
