In general, the practice of charging people for content that once had was totally open is both ethically questionable and bad for future business. I understand where this site is coming from, but I think it's the least community pleasing solution. Personally, I think Brian Cronin had the best solution when it came to capitalizing on his output when he did the Comic Book Legends Revealed book which used existing stuff from the site in combination with new stuff. None of the old content has changed, and then you get to support someone who's free work you've enjoyed. I think that making books with partial new content and partial existing content would have been a better way to appropriate somewhat of a pay model to the webcomics.com content.

[...] Johanna Draper Carlson, Comics Worth Reading: I’m not sure “it just isn’t the same” is a compelling counter-argument, given the audience. Many of them may see the posts and discussions as entertainment, especially casual/newer comickers who aren’t ready to think of their work as a small business. People are also rather upset that what was free yesterday is no longer, with no warning, and there are no sample posts or content available to judge what their money will buy. [...]

Are you sure they'll still want contributions? And do you expect to get paid for them?

I'm curious to see how this experiment looks in 3 months, when the number of new subscribers has dropped and we have a good idea if the content is still updating regularly.

Webcomics finally grows up. As a one time contributor to this site, "No Spec for you!", and an outside professional in web development looking in to a creative industry, I'm happy to see the HalfPixel crew following the paths of other sites that offer advice and insight for nominal fee like nettuts.com and other Evanto sites.

I'm also interested in how to contribute more now that I know that their audience is "opted in".

If I had written articles for free for a free web site which then began charging people — including me — for access to my free words, I would be more than a little upset.

Indeed, I'm a little upset at the notion that I might have to pay to read any comments I may have ever made there in the past (I'll have to hope that the Google machine has some record of whether I've done so; there are so many webcomics and comics sites out there where I've commented in the past that they all sort of run together after a while).
