i just got the 1st book (four eyed prince) i’ve read over 16 times it’s so welldone it makes me want to buy the whole series ! ! !

I just got my hands on Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei V5, and I am not a happy reader. I much preferred the dogged attempts to annotate every reference (I think I caught a few that the translator missed), and even worse, they changed *all* of the running gags. Including “I’m in despair! {Today’s topic} has left me in despair!” Seriously, how can you change that?

I used to feel that way more than I do now. I don’t know if it’s a change in translation style or just that the stories are less specific as the series goes on. I’m glad it doesn’t bother me — I’m focusing on what I enjoy about it, but I can see where it might be more of a stumbling block for others. With such elements as the teacher’s costume, it does wear its culture on its sleeve.

The issue for me with Zetsubou-Sensei isn’t that it’s hard to understand so much as I’m painfully aware of how much I’m missing by not reading it in the original Japanese. No amount of cultural notes can really fix that — for me, at least — even though I appreciate the translators’ efforts to identify the literary sources, C-list actors, and sports figures who crop up in the text. I wish I enjoyed this one more, as I agree with your assessment of the artwork: it’s terrific.
