Monica,
Yeah! I’m glad to see someone name one of the many infamous female pirates.
02/03/2010 at 2:31 PM
Jack Sparrow, because of the great mix of when he plans it and when he makes it up as he goes along. (:
02/03/2010 at 2:43 PM
Han Solo. He was a pirate, right? A space pirate.
02/03/2010 at 3:09 PM
Kevin Kline as the Pirate King (Pirates of Penzance, 1983 film). Hands down favorite since before I could walk. :)
02/03/2010 at 5:53 PM
At the moment? Pirate Zevran. Stupid, stupid Bioware. ;)
02/03/2010 at 6:23 PM
The Black Pirate played by Douglas Fairbanks in the movie of the same name (1926 2-strip technicolor). It has informed every pirate movie ever since either directly or indirectly.

02/04/2010 at 1:24 PM
Pirate Hunter Zoro!!!! Roronoa is my favorite character of One Piece, though before being a pirate he was a pirate hunter, LOL :D Well, I’m torn between Yul Brynner, because someone mentioned him and I got weak in the knees, LOL :D Awesome pirates all over!!! :D
02/04/2010 at 2:44 PM
Captain Hook! (Barrie, not Disney.)
02/04/2010 at 6:43 PM

Hmm… probably Captain Jack Sparrow!!! He’s so drunk half the time in the movies though…
02/05/2010 at 11:28 AM
Edward Newgate (Whitebeard), he speaks nobly and can take down anyone, but most of all he cares for his “sons”! xD
02/05/2010 at 11:54 AM
Tony Tony Chopper
02/05/2010 at 12:07 PM
I absolutely love Francois L’Ollonais. He was quite the pirate and Roronoa Zoro is based on him. He was a ferocious pirate, but ended up dying a most gruesome death.
02/05/2010 at 12:12 PM
My Favorite would have to be Jack Sparrow. He is funny, original, always drinking rum.
02/05/2010 at 12:52 PM
My favorite fictional pirate is Monkey D. Luffy.
02/05/2010 at 1:10 PM
favorite pirate is Usopp because he’s the king of liars.
02/05/2010 at 1:44 PM
I’m gonna have to go with Capitan Jack Sparrow, as well. Maybe it’s the eyeliner?
02/05/2010 at 8:59 PM

Luffy, because he kicks ass! :)
02/07/2010 at 4:37 PM
Captain Blood, he was a one of a kind pirate.
02/07/2010 at 7:00 PM
Pirate Queen Meg Malloy, followed by Polly Pringle.
02/08/2010 at 4:47 AM
Not one mention of Space Pirate Captain Harlock?? He was “it” in the 70s and 80s, man. He personified Matsumoto’s disgust with the kowtowing Japanese government back then. Harlock flys under no one but his own, his flag of freedom on the Sea of Stars. We’re talking about man’s romance, when all the main characters were hot-blooded, strong, and self-sacrifice still meant something. Sniffling touchy-feely harem boys need not apply.
02/08/2010 at 11:19 AM
Red-Haired Shanks is the best of course!
02/08/2010 at 11:27 AM
Since picking Nami would be too easy I will go with Captian Harlock. Harlock is a man’s man and a ladies dream. Plus the handsome face and awesome fashion sense do not hurt at all. Also sign me up for a laser cutlass.
02/08/2010 at 11:45 AM
Sabalom Glitz! He would argue that he’s not a pirate at all, but it’s hard to ignore what this space traveller is really up to.
02/08/2010 at 12:35 PM
My first two picks would have been the Thing as Blackbeard and Harlock, so… Captain Morgan!
02/08/2010 at 3:06 PM
Ching Shih (c. 1785 – 1844)Female pirate who came into power after her husbands death. Robbed villages from Macau to Canton until her “retirement”. She proceeded to take all her loot and opened a gambling house with her adopted son turned husband.

My favorite pirate:
The runner-up is Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte in The Bucaneer. So tortured, so poetic. A fiction based on a real pirate. Also the first pirate I encountered, thanks to a TV screening of the film when I was but a wee tad.
But my number one pirate is pure fiction: Captain Clegg. Originally Christopher Syn, a placid vicar of Dymchurch, England, Clegg became a bloodthristy pirate when his attempt to save his fiancee was unsuccessful. He assumed the name Clegg and none of his men knew from whence he came, only that they feared him more than death. After being hanged by own men and left for dead, Clegg resurfaced and once again assumed the identity of Syn, only to ride by night as the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Clegg’s adventures are chronicled in the Russell Thorndyke novels and one film, the 1964 Hammer film Night Creatures.
Bloodthirsty, driven by secrecy, rage and a passion for his own brand of justice. That’s the pirate stuff we know and love!
