My favorite pirate:
The runner-up is Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte in The Bucaneer. So tortured, so poetic. A fiction based on a real pirate. Also the first pirate I encountered, thanks to a TV screening of the film when I was but a wee tad.
But my number one pirate is pure fiction: Captain Clegg. Originally Christopher Syn, a placid vicar of Dymchurch, England, Clegg became a bloodthristy pirate when his attempt to save his fiancee was unsuccessful. He assumed the name Clegg and none of his men knew from whence he came, only that they feared him more than death. After being hanged by own men and left for dead, Clegg resurfaced and once again assumed the identity of Syn, only to ride by night as the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Clegg’s adventures are chronicled in the Russell Thorndyke novels and one film, the 1964 Hammer film Night Creatures.
Bloodthirsty, driven by secrecy, rage and a passion for his own brand of justice. That’s the pirate stuff we know and love!

Since picking Nami would be too easy I will go with Captian Harlock. Harlock is a man’s man and a ladies dream. Plus the handsome face and awesome fashion sense do not hurt at all. Also sign me up for a laser cutlass.

Not one mention of Space Pirate Captain Harlock?? He was “it” in the 70s and 80s, man. He personified Matsumoto’s disgust with the kowtowing Japanese government back then. Harlock flys under no one but his own, his flag of freedom on the Sea of Stars. We’re talking about man’s romance, when all the main characters were hot-blooded, strong, and self-sacrifice still meant something. Sniffling touchy-feely harem boys need not apply.
