  1. RIN! is very sweet and warm, with nothing too explicit to scare away new readers.

  2. Future Lovers, published by Deux.

  3. Fake by Sanami Matoh. It was my first exposure to yaoi. Will have to check out Rin! though.

  4. Those three mentioned above are all good choices. I would add ONLY THE RING FINGER KNOWS, for the sweet chaste romance, or SHOUT OUT LOUD to introduce some of the Japanese cultural tropes in many yaoi titles.

  5. Gravitation! It becomes surprisingly deep and thoughtful as it progresses, but it’s more shounen-ai, and not yaoi. It’s a good introduction to the genre~

For Yaoi, I agree with above and recommend FAKE~ also, though it’s a bit cheesy, I love Our Everlasting.

  6. The one yaoi book I’d recommend to a reader new to the genre would be… Only the Ring Finger Knows by Satoru Kannagi and Hotaru Odagiri~ It’s great for beginners and it’s one of the first yaoi manga I read when I was just getting started :3

  7. I love Loveless, but I think it’s considered shounen-ai and Ritsuka’s age might be a turn off for some.

Your recent reviews of Fumi Yoshinaga, particularly The Moon and The Sandals, have certainly piqued my interest.

  8. Zesty! by Margot Redding & Studio Kosaru. Published by Yaoi Press Non-explicit and very light romance. I know it more shounen-ai than yaoi but one must crawl before you can walk.

  9. Seduce Me After the Show by est em and published by Deux Press. If you like Fumi Yoshinaga, I bet you’ll like est em. It’s flowing, gorgeous art on the page. Not just a graphic novel, not just a nice story, not just pretty images on the page. It’s incredible and I’m not quite explaining it right. Heh. XD

  10. Definitely Yellow (published by DMP). It’s such a good, believable love story. It also has very interesting story arc, and some super intense action scenes (and by ‘action scenes’, I mean both kinds). It’s a great first yaoi and I would recommend it to anybody.

  11. Fumi Yoshinaga works actually would be my choice, simply because they’re usually solidly written and don’t necessarily fall prey to some of the more major turn-offs of the yaoi genre. Though I suppose it’s hard to make a recommendation without having someone in mind!

  12. […] a beginner on how to get started in yaoi, and you may win a pair of Fumi Yoshinga manga from Manga Worth […]

  13. Even though I think Yoshinaga’s the better writer (or maybe that should be BEST), I’d have to recommend FAKE or Only the Ring Finger Knows to new yaoi readers. They’re just very accessible to beginners.

  14. When I wanted to expose myself to the genre, the title that came up as “the title” was ONLY THE RING FINGER KNOWS, so that’s what I started with. It is the best recommendation as it is clean, and is like slowly stepping into a pool.

  15. With yaoi, I think it’s best to just dive in (though One Thousand & One Nights would be my rec for shounen ai). Fumi Yoshinaga or est em are always brilliant, though starting with them might spoil you. Hinako Takanaga does more typical storylines, but does them really well, and I love her artwork. I also liked Dining Bar Akira.

Did not like FAKE, but I’m in the minority there.

  16. Kennetta Prince

Eerie Queerie by Shuri Shiozu as an introduction. Hilarious.
Cut by Toko Kawai to get you hooked. Inspiring.
